What is AlarmRecycle?
Did you know that there is a way to recycle used or expired smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms? ReGeneration’s AlarmRecycle is the solution you’ve been looking for! BC residents are able to drop off their smoke and CO alarms for recycling at many locations across BC.
Drop-off Product Details:
- Smoke alarms
- Carbon monoxide (CO) alarms
- Combination smoke & CO alarms
Is there a limit to the number of smoke or CO alarms you can drop off at one time?
Yes, there is. It’s 40 smoke or CO alarms at once. If you have more than 40 units, please visit our Large Volume End User page for information on disposal options.
If you want more information on the accepted products, you can call the Recycling Hotline at 604.732.9253 in the Lower Mainland and 1.800.667.4321 in the rest of BC.
But, how much is it to recycle my alarms?
It’s completely free!
You may have noticed an “environmental handing fee” on the sale of new smoke and CO alarms. The environmental handling fee is NOT a government tax. No part of this fee goes to the government.
It’s important to note that there’s no refund to collect when dropping off your items for recycling.
What does the environmental handling fee pay for?
Good news! The environmental handling fee covers all program costs – collection, transportation and recycling of your smoke and CO alarms. All collected fees fund the AlarmRecycle program so BC residents have nothing to worry about.
For more information visit our Environmental Handling Fee page.
I’m curious…how are the smoke and CO alarms recycled?
Your used smoke and CO alarms are broken down into different parts. Those materials are recycled as much as possible! The radioactive part of some alarms is shipped to a radioactive waste facility.
